If your campaign is using a "Contact Changed" campaign trigger there's a couple of things you might want to consider so your tests go smoothly and no accidents happen.

***The most important thing to remember is that when building your trigger query in your campaign, ALL contacts in your database that match the trigger query will be added to the campaign when you activate it.***

So how do we test this and avoid mistakes?

*We build a contact segment.*

Before moving on, it is recommended you create test contacts for testing your campaigns. If you have not done this yet, *[please review this article.](/wiki/spaces/*/pages/170688575)*

## Using Contact Segments To Build & Test Trigger Queries

1. Go to Contacts > Contact Segments and create a new contact segment. Use this segment to build your query you intend to use for your trigger. You can preview the contacts that match the query right within the segment builder. In the screenshot below we can see 177 contacts match our example query we intend to use as the trigger:

2. Once you are sure you have the right query, modify it slightly to ONLY include your test contacts. Using the same query above, we are going to modify it slightly so that we can isolate for our test contact. We are going to isolate based on the email address of my test contact:

3. Now that we have our query, let's go configure our campaign trigger. We are simply replicating the modified query in the previous screenshot in step 2 above:

4. After you configured and saved your campaign trigger, the campaign overview tab should show a green box that displays the number of contacts matching the trigger query. This should match the number of test contacts your modified query pulled - in our example, just 1. If this number does not match, something is wrong and you should review your trigger again:> Macro (inline-external-image)

5. If running multiple tests using the same test contacts, you may want to match these configurations for your campaign as well. This will allow you to remove the contact from the campaign and re-add them later.* Just make sure to revisit these settings before making your campaign go live*:

6. When you are satisfied with your tests, you can remove the modification from your trigger and activate the campaign:

7. Once again, removing the modification to the query and saving, your campaign should now show the total number of contacts that match the query. This should be pretty close to the number of contacts that matched your original query from step 1. Slight deviations are possible if new contacts or updates from the CRM have occurred since step 1. In our case we had 177 contacts in step 1, we now have 178. This should be fine.

If you are happy with the results, activate your campaign.
